Just a Pinch of South

For those of us who grew up in the South but have moved elsewhere, we love our roots and all they have provided. There's a lot that I've come to appreciate about the South. But let's be honest, most of us don't want to go back to "full Southern." We're happy with just a pinch here and there to add flavor to the life we live now. If you are not a Southerner, perhaps you'll come to better appreciate the little gifts the American South has given and continues to give our culture. This blog is written by Elizabeth Bloodworth. I tweet at @apinchofsouth and my other tumblr is called "everythingthatdoesntfitelsewhere" which is just what it sounds like.

Do you know the neighborhood in your town most associated with old-money wealth?  It’s not the Real Housewives universe. Those are people living in new-money McMansions usually in the ex-burbs. A different set of people. What I’m talking about is the part of town where people belong to country clubs, where their people pretend they’ve lived there for generations. Where maybe kids grow up not even knowing that everyone doesn’t live just like them. In New York City, it has always been the Upper East Side. In Atlanta, it is Buckhead.
My friend Shannon lives in Atlanta, and she sent me this email last week.

Only in Buckhead. Today we stopped at a lemonade stand at the back gate of church. As we drove on, we discovered that the bright yellow cocktail napkins that came with our drinks were personalized with the phrase “The Sanders Lemonade Stand.” What can I say? I am just so glad we stopped to help those poor children.

I’d describe that as Full Southern. Monogrammed lemonade stand napkins? Who is this mom?
