Just a Pinch of South

For those of us who grew up in the South but have moved elsewhere, we love our roots and all they have provided. There's a lot that I've come to appreciate about the South. But let's be honest, most of us don't want to go back to "full Southern." We're happy with just a pinch here and there to add flavor to the life we live now. If you are not a Southerner, perhaps you'll come to better appreciate the little gifts the American South has given and continues to give our culture. This blog is written by Elizabeth Bloodworth. In honor of (the book) Gone with the Wind and its 75th anniversary, let’s take a minute to talk Scarlett O’Hara.
There’s a misconception that most Southern women strive to be like her. At least I hope it’s a misconception. Scarlett has determination, which is admirable. And, I must say, she is fascinating.  But really, she’s awful. She is conniving, manipulative, and foolish.
And she determines much of what people think of when they think of Southern belles. I’d like to believe that that they are wrong.
But I’ve met a few “Scarletts” in my day…
(P.S. If you’ve never read the book, it really is gripping. I read it over spring break in 9th grade)

Just do the cones… make sundaes, make Blizzards, ‘n… put stuff on ‘em, ‘n… see a lot of people come in, a lot of people come to the D.Q… burgers… ice cream… anything, you know? Cokes… just drive in and get a Coke, if you’re thirsty.”
